THE MAN FROM NOWHERE 1983

1983

JANUARY

Recording more demos with Steve Severin for The Glove (named after one character in The Beatles' Yellow Submarine).
LIKE AN ANIMAL, LOOKING GLASS GIRL, SEX-EYE-MAKE UP, MR. ALPHABET SAYS, A BLUES IN DRAG, PUNISH ME WITH KISSES, THIS GREEN CITY, ORGY, PERFECT MURDER, RELAX, THE MAN FROM NOWHERE, MOUTH TO MOUTH, OPENED TEH BOX (A WALTZ), THE TIGHTROPE (ALMOST TIME), AND ALL AROUND US THE MERMAIDS SANG, HOLIDAY 80

Robert Smith spent the following month touring with the Banshees (Japan/New Zealand/Australia).

MARCH

7th
London, Hammersmith, Riverside Studios
TV performance with Lol on drums, Steve Severin on bass, Marc Almond's Venomettes on strings. Robert Smith played and sang
SIAMESE TWINS live while two Royal Ballet dancers would do an entire coregraphy to the song. That was a test to see how Robert could write a score for the Royal Ballet. This project wouldn't see the light of day.

11th
Manchester, Oxford Road Show, TV
Originally a promotional appearance for LET'S GO TO BED, but by putting out a band especially for this (Andy Anderson on drums, Derek Thompson - from SPK - on bass), Robert and Lol played
ONE HUNDRED YEARS, and THE FIGUREHEAD live instead.

MAY

Recording the
BLUE SUNSHINE album for THE GLOVE (Robert Smith and Steve Severin's project together) with Andy Anderson on drums adn Jeannette Landray on vocals. An "attack of the senses" according to Robert.

Around that time, The Cure (Robert & Lol), entered Jam Studio to record electronic music for a new single (THE WALK, LAMENT, THE UPSTAIRS ROOM, THE DREAM) with Steve Nye producing - resulting in Robert to conclude: "every week I'm in another group".

JUNE

London, Angel Studio
Robert spent the month recording the Hyaena album with Siouxsie and the Banshees. A strange
video for THE WALK was done by Tim Pope.

JULY

THE WALK/THE UPSTAIRS ROOM single got released and became a hit in the UK, obliging The Cure to appear twice on Top Of The Pops. Porl Thompson mimed teh bass on the first showing. Then Phil Thornalley took the job and became the Cure's bassist. The band was a 4-piece now with him, Andy Anderson on drums, Lol Tolhurst on keyboards and Robert.

This line-up would also embark for a few live dates in the UK, USA, France soundign quite different from previous Cure's incarnations. Most of the songs included keyboard parts.

27th
Bournemouth, Midnight Express
Secret gig in a small club used as a warm up for the Elephant Fayre festival appearence. PORNOGRAPHY, A FOREST, THE DROWNING MAN, ALL CATS ARE GREY (Soundcheck), ONE HUNDRED YEARS, FOREVER

28th
Bath, Moles Club
Another secret gig. The band tried more songs they didn't play fefore: THE HANGING GARDEN, LAMENT, and THE WALK (the original keyboards tune played on guitar). FOREVER was very short that night probably because they had to end the show on time. COLD

AUGUST

The band arrived in America for a few concerts (only New York, and California, like in 1981) since they didn't tour playing the songs from PORNOGRAPHY there. In San Francisco, they tried THE FUNERAL PARTY for the first and last time. That version was pretty interesting, apart from including lots of improvised lyrics, the song actually sounded quiete different (lower octaves).

14th
Paris, Studio des Dames

Recording songs for a new single: THE LOVECATS, SPEAK MY LANGUAGE, MR. PINK EYES, A HAND INSIDE MY MOUTH. The song was inspired by the Aristocats movie (taking place in Paris). So teh whole idea was to record a jazzy single there. Part of the lyrics could also be interpreted as a suicide pact between two lovers.

SEPTEMBER

THE GLOVE'S BLUE SUNSHINE album was released. Robert Smith spent this month and part of the following with the Banshees: videos, Top of the Pops, live dates...

OCTOBER

25th
THE LOVECATS single was released and became THE CURE's biggest hit to date (reaching #7 in the charts). The video for the song was filmed in a house in Hampstead; Robert spread the idea that they got it through an estate agent as they pretended being interested in buying it, and gave back the keys once the video was shot.

DECEMBER

16th
A LP compilation called
JAPANESE WHISPERS, putting the last three CURE singles together was released. Works on the next CURE album started immediately after at the Garden and Eden studios: SHAKE DOG SHAKE, PIGGY IN THE MIRROR, BIRDMAD GIRL, GIVE ME IT, THROW YOUR FOOT, HAPPY THE MAN, THE CATERPILLAR. Demos were also done at Olympic Studios: SADACIC.

25th
The band appeard a third time at Top Of The Pops miming
THE LOVECATS. Porl still mimed the cello on the song while Robert was completely drunk for this Chrestmas special. Robert would also mimed DEAR PRUDENCE with the Banshees on the same show.

THE CURE ARE DEAD 1982

1982

JULY

Robert Smith demos: TEMPTATION TWO, YOU STAYED..., ARIEL

AUGUST

Flexipop Magazine asked The Cure for a song. But with the band being no more, Robert Smith recorded a new song on his own called LAMENT (written on the previous month).

SEPTEMBER

Island Studios
Robert and Lol started to work on a new single, LET'S GO TO BED/JUST ONE KISS. Simon wasn't called back, so the duo used a drum machine while Lol gave up drums to play the keyboards. The skeleton of the song is actually based on a unreleased drack demoed late '81 called TEMPTATION. For the single's final recordind they hired Steve Goulding on drums.

OCTOBER

A video for
LET'S GO TO BED was directed by Tim Pope.

Robert also recorded a demo with Steve Severin at the Playground studios. Both had been talking for years about making a record together. The song that resulted from teh session was a rough version of PUNISH ME WITH KISSES (to be released later as The Glove).

24th
Kid Jensen Session, BBC Radio
The songs recorded for the radio were: LET'S GO TO BED, ONE HUNDRED YEARS, JUST ONE KISS, ARIEL. Lol played the keyboards.

NOVEMBER

Robert spent the three following months playing the guitar for Siousie and the Banshees.

12th

MELT/PAINTED BIRD

The LET'S GO TO BED single just went out under the name of the Cure against the will of Robert Smith who ended up denying it.

THREE... (FOREVER) 1980-1982

SEPTEMBER

The Cure became a trio again, working on new songs. FAITH, DOUBT, and an unreleased one called DROWNING dates from this period, with Lol on guitar (an experament). Demos were recorded at Morgan studios at the end of the month, but they were rejected: THE HOLY HOUR, PRIMARY (musically different), GOING HOME TIME...

OCTOBER
28 dates were set up visiting Sweden for the first time. An opportunity to work on some of the new songs with Robert making up the words every night. Lots of those imrovised lyrics refered to Fuchsia's Gormengharst (by Mervyn Peake), a book that he was reading while on tour and litterally falling in love with the character. Later, Fuchsia would appear on THE DROWNING MAN's lyrics.

JANUARY

More work in the studio. A
French TV crew came to film the band. Only THE FIGUREHEAD (demo version would be shown on TV. Late January, the RAK studios in London were booked to record the album with Phil Thornally producing.

Recording PORNOGRAPHY would start an era of miscommunication in the band. And that simply became a life style. Robert would read phychiatrists, anything to do with mental illness and drugs would do the rest. The final lyrics were written in a "stram of consciousness".

Calling the album "PORNOGRAPHY" was Robert Smith's idea. The word cerainly sums up the grim side of man both on the immediate and aspiring level. Would it be physical or spiritual or both? The band woudl spend two months at RAK, also reording the "Airlock" soundtrack (another film made by Ric Gallup to be projected before the band entered the stage.

They started with 10:15 like usual and continued playing their basic set. They also tried PLAY FOR TODAY again and a new song called "S" (an early version of IN YOUR HOUSE).

After the show, Robert offered to play the guitar for the Banshees for the tour to resume as much as possible.

KILLING AN ARAB

The early recording of KILLING AN ARAB is quite surprising: slow and barely a guitar solo. The lyrics were inspired by The Stranger, a novel by Albert Camus.

JANUARY

Hansa rejected the band's demo and suggested a few rock 'n roll classics instead. So, a third recording session was set up but the band refused to compromise. New versions of I JUST NEED MYSELF and Rebel Rebel were recorded, along with an early version of PLASTIC PASSION and SMASHED UP.

Lockjaw (a local band Simon Gallup played bass in) supported Easy Cure for the first time.

MARCH

Hansa's contract was dissolved since the record company wouldn't release the band's material. Easy Cure evolved quite quickly, tracks like 10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT and GRINDING HALT date from this era, making it more difficult for Porl to include guitar solos on the new style of songs that was emerging.

MAY

Porl left early May 1978, reducing the band to a trio (Robert Smith, Michael Dempsey, Lol Tolhurst) and giving the opportunity to shorten "Easy Cure" to "The Cure".
