JANUARY

The band changed their name to "Easy Cure" based on a song written by Lol at the time: "I don't need no Easy Cure". The line-up included Robert Smith on guitar, Porl Thompson on guitar, Michael Dempsey on bass, Lol Tolhurst on drums and Peter O'Toole on vocals.

MAY

A telegram from Hansa Records arrived asking for the band to come adn audition in London. A tape and a picture were sent on the previous month to the record company's talent contest.

6th

First "real" show. The Rocket would become a regular venue for the band as it was one of the few places that let them play.

13th
Easy Cure arrived to Morgan Studios in London to be filmed while performing two songs.

JULY

Easy Cure (now a 4-piece band) recorded their first demos for Hansa - SEE THE CHILDREN, MEATHOOK, LISTEN (PILLBOX TALES), I JUST NEED MYSELF, I WANT TO BE OLD. Peter O'Toole left on the previous month so Robert Smith took part and became the band's singer.

I'M COLD
KILLING AN ARAB

The early recording of KILLING AN ARAB is quite surprising: slow and barely a guitar solo. The lyrics were inspired by The Stranger, a novel by Albert Camus.

1978

JANUARY

Hansa rejected the band's demo and suggested a few rock 'n roll classics instead. So, a third recording session was set up but the band refused to compromise. New versions of I JUST NEED MYSELF and Rebel Rebel were recorded, along with an early version of PLASTIC PASSION and SMASHED UP.

FEBRUARY

19th
Crawley, The Rocket

Lockjaw (a local band Simon Gallup played bass in) supported Easy Cure for the first time.

MARCH

Hansa's contract was dissolved since the record company wouldn't release the band's material. Easy Cure evolved quite quickly, tracks like 10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT and GRINDING HALT date from this era, making it more difficult for Porl to include guitar solos on the new style of songs that was emerging.

MAY

Porl left early May 1978, reducing the band to a trio (Robert Smith, Michael Dempsey, Lol Tolhurst) and giving the opportunity to shorten "Easy Cure" to "The Cure".
