THREE IMAGINARY BOYS 1978-1979











MAY

27th
New demos were recorded at the Chestnut Studios: 10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT, BOY'S DON'T CRY, IT'S NOT YOU, FIRE IN CAIRO

AUGUST

10th
The band met Chris Parry from Polydor. He proposed them a deal with his own independant label that would be distributed through Polydor.

SEPTEMBER

The cure signed a 6-month contract with Fiction Records. Chris Parry became the band's producer but also their manager, setting up concerts, giving them the opportunity to play away from their hometown.

20th
London, Willesden, Morgan Studios
THREE IMAGINARY BOYS,
10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT, FIRE IN CAIRO, PLASTIC PASSION, KILLING AN ARAB were recorded. Parts of most tracks would be re-recorded later for the final versions.

DECEMBER

4th
John Peel Radio Session
Four tracks were recorded for the famous radio show on BBC Radio 1:
KILLING AN ARAB, 10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT, BOY'S DON'T CRY, FIRE IN CAIRO.

22th
The Cure's first single,
KILLING AN ARAB/10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT, was relased.





JANUARY

The band returned to Morgan Studios the finish the album. They recorded most songs of their repertoire including: FOXY LADY.

FEBRUARY

The band was asked to go to London to meet the director for the
10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT video.

MARCH

Most of the month was spent touring across the UK.

11th
London, Marquee Club SETLIST/PHOTOS/LYRICS

MAY

5th
THREE IMAGINARY BOYS album's release. Press reviews were generally good but NME's Paul Morley completely demolished the band: "The Cure are trying to tell us so mething. They're trying to tell us they don't exist."

6th
John Peel Session
The band recorded: DESPERATRE JOURNALIST (Lyrics),
GRINDING HALT, SUBWAY SONG, PLASTIC PASSION, ACCURACY. The first track consisted of GRINDING HALT with different lyrics (mocking Morley's prose and also referring to Ian Penman who reviewed GRINDING HALT promo by mistake.

17th
The band started a 30-date tour in the UK to promote the album. The live repertoire included the same 15 songs they have been playing since the beginning of the year, playing 10:15 twice (the second version being much faster.

Roots, Exeter SETLIST


JUNE

1st
Carshalton, Open Air Festival SETLIST
The Cure was part of a "Mod Revival" bill. Later, this would inspire Robert Smith the idea and lyrics for JUMPING SOMEONE ELSE'S TRAIN.

26th
Second single, BOY'S DON'T CRY/PLASTIC PASSION released on Fiction Records. Unfortunately not the hit the band expected.

JULY

1st
London, Lyceum SETLIST

29th
First foreign concert at an open air festival in Sterrebos (Holland).

AUGUST

3rd
Robert met Steve Severin of Siouxsie and the Banshees at a Throbbing Gristle concert in London. Steve invited the Cure to perform with his band.

13th
Kid Jensen Radio Session

24th
Reading, Festival SETLIST/PHOTOS
That was the first major festival the band played at. The Police and Motorhead headlined the night.

29th
Bournemouth, Stateside Theatre SETLIST
"Special guests" for Siouxsie and the Banshees' Join Hands tour. PLAY FOR TODAY (lyrics), premiered that night: a slow and basic version that got shortened later.

SEPTEMBER

7th
Aberdeen, Capitol Theatre SETLIST/PHOTOS
The Cure played an extra long set as Siouxsie and the Banshees could'nt perform that night (their guitarist and drummer left in the afternoon). They started with 10:15 like usual and continued playing their basic set. They also tried PLAY FOR TODAY again and a new song called "S" (an early version of IN YOUR HOUSE).

After the show, Robert offered to play the guitar for the Banshees for the tour to resume as much as possible.

9th
Rotterdam, New Pop Festival SETLIST
The band was headlining the festival, playing in front of 10,000 people. It was recorded for the radio and filmed for the television as well. The excellent version of
10:15 SATURDAY NIGHT closing the show and KILLING AN ARAB were broadcast on Dutch radio.

18th
Leicester, DeMontfort Hall SETLIST
The Banshees' tour resumed. Robert Smith appeared twice on stage every evening for the next 17 nights, since the Banshees didn't find a guitarist in the meantime.

26th
Oxford, New Theatre SETLIST/PHOTOS/LYRICS

JUMPING SOMEONE ELSE'S TRAIN/I'M COLD were recorded some time in September at Morgan Studios. Siouxsie, visiting, did the backing vocals on I'M COLD. I'M A CULT HERO and I DIG YOU were also recorded aroudn that time with Simon Gallup on bass and Michael Dempsey on keyboards, Frank Bell on vocals.

OCTOBER

15th
London, Hammersmith Odeon SETLIST
That was the last concert with Michael Dempsey on bass who's been playing with Robert Smith since the school days. It's possible the show started with a song from SEVENTEEN SECONDS.

23rd
Michael Dempsey "departed" only one week after the tour with the Banshees was over.
